Works of the month November
In most of the peninsula autumn has now arrived, with foggy days in the flat areas and also the first snows in the mountains; some more fortunate regions can enjoy, at least in the central hours of the day, short periods of heat. However, the climate is the autumn one, the night minimums have dropped and the days have definitely shortened. In the garden most of the annuals have finished blooming, or are now running out, and the plants are losing their leaves, often taking on reddish or orange colors, which herald the winter. In this period of the year, however, the works are in the garden, to prepare the soil and plants for the rest of the cold months; as regards the houseplants, however, they will all have already found their place in the house, we will only have to pay attention to the water needs.
During the winter period many plants have a period of vegetative rest, during which their water and nutritional needs decrease considerably; this also happens for houseplants, even if they are kept at fairly high temperatures, short days cause a reduced vegetative development. We water our plants sporadically, only in the case of very dry soil, and we avoid providing fertilizer. In this period, the main enemy of our plants is domestic heating, which dries the air: let's remember to vaporize the leaves every week, using demineralized water. If an air conditioning system is installed in our apartment, it is advisable to also activate an environmental humidifier; if, on the other hand, we have a floor heating system, remember to keep the pots always raised, to prevent the heat from the pipes from causing serious damage to the root systems of our plants.
